When orthodontics is completed, research shows that most people’s teeth have a tendency to return toward their original positions. Specific research into this topic was started in 1981 at the University of Washington and we now have thirty years of research data. The results of this research show that about 70% of cases treated orthodontically have relapse (returning to original positions) problems. It is, therefore, recommended that patients consider wearing retainers at bedtime on a long-term basis.
